When it comes to teen pregnancy and teen parenting, there are a number of conflicting ideas. Some people are opposed to it; others seem to think that it can be okay.
One teen commented on www.mycentraljersey.com that she thought there was nothing wrong with a teen being a parent provided she had the support of family members and friends; her insistence was that a teen’s body would bounce back quickly and that being a teen doesn’t affect the ability to be a good parent.

There is an assertion by some that teen pregnancy and teen motherhood have been somehow glorified by the announcement of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy and the support that she has received from her family along with teen/tween TV star Jamie Lynn Spears making the choice to keep her baby. While in both of these cases, the teens have had the family support and financial backing that would enable them to raise a child, that’s not always the case and, that’s causing some concern.

The Changing Response to Teen Pregnancy
While teen pregnancy can be scandalous and a topic of conversation within the media, this hasn’t always been the case.
On many levels, prior to the 1900s, teen pregnancy was perfectly normal. Women and men lived fewer years and it was not uncommon for schooling to stop early and for teens to be considered adults, ready to marry and branch out into lives of their own.

Hollywood’s Response to Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy got a “bump” from the film industry in the winter of 2007 into 2008, thanks in large part to the Oscar buzz surrounding Ellen Page in Juno. During the film, Page, as the title character, sought answers to questions about growing up, acknowledged having sex with her friend - leading to pregnancy - because she was bored, and focused on finding adoptive parents.

No matter what choices you make for yourself, when your friend tells you she is pregnant, it can come as a surprise. When you’re teenagers, the surprise can be even bigger.
Of course, when your friend is pregnant she’s going to be afraid, angry, overwhelmed and is going to have to make big decisions; you’re going to want to be there to offer support.
