There are a number of reasons why teen pregnancy in the United States seems to be on the rise again, and one of the assumed reasons is that if it is good enough for celebrities and those who have been thrust into the spotlight, it must be something to aspire too. However, when you approach anyone who has been a pregnant teen, particularly if they have come from a poor family or are, well, not Caucasian, there is a double standard: the reality hardly ever looks anything like the fantasy did.

One of the greatest challenges presented by teen pregnancy is a sense of separation from one’s peers. A pregnant teen who was once social, outgoing and into going out with friends who has decided to keep her baby is likely to withdraw as the pregnancy affects her energy level and she seems to have less in common with her peer group. This is a part of the reason why many teens who make the choice to keep their babies end up dropping out of school.

There is an assertion by some that teen pregnancy and teen motherhood have been somehow glorified by the announcement of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy and the support that she has received from her family along with teen/tween TV star Jamie Lynn Spears making the choice to keep her baby. While in both of these cases, the teens have had the family support and financial backing that would enable them to raise a child, that’s not always the case and, that’s causing some concern.
